Purpose
Supralevator anal abscess is the least common type of anorectal abscess, whose diagnosis and adequate treatment may be challenging. The mainstay of treatment included intrarectal abscess drainage, however drainage through posterior intersphincteric groove gained interest in patients with supralevator anal abscess. The aim of this study is to evaluate the efficacy of drainage through posterior intersphincteric groove, compared to intrarectal drainage.
Methods
A total of 91 patients with anorectal abscess underwent incision and drainage from 2011 to 2020 in the Ewha University Mokdong hospital. Twenty-six patients with supralevator anal abscess were found and included in the present study. Type of complications including fistula formation was compared according to the operation methods.
