To date, studies about the Korean War and major battles conducted within the ROK Army are mainly based on doctrinal analyses. Such approaches are effective in respect of drawing tactical lessons, but have limits in expanding strategic thinking and enhancing diversity in the research field of military history.
The objective of this study is to analyze the Korean War based on the notion of Culture of War. Currently, studies that applied the concept of culture of war are rare to find. However, this idea is very valuable in that it covers not only the war history studies but also the formation of the culture and values of the ROK forces.
This study will look into the definition of culture of war, analyze the culture of war of the U.S. and the PRC that fought in the Korean War, and present the implications of the culture of war through the case of the Korean War. It was found that combatant nations fought in the Korean War pursued tactics and strategies that reflected their unique cultures of war, and that it was pursued constantly throughout the war and had a predominant impact on the conduct and supervision of war.
By understanding the culture of war, it will be possible to present the topic of what needs to be innovated by perceiving the identity and nature of the ROK forces.
