Huang Fan (1950- ), based on his unique understanding of the people, work, and humanism in Taiwanese modern commercial and industrial society, went deep into the center of Taiwan’s politics, economy, and society to bring out and show the hidden truth and hypocrisy to the reader. Researchers generally divide Huang Fan’s works into four stages. The first stage is from 1979 to 1985 when he tended to show trend of political literature and urban literature. The second stage is from 1985 to 1992 when he used the artistic method of postmodernism style. The third stage is the period of stagnation of creation from 1993 to 2002. In the fourth stage, immersing himself in creation again, in July 2002, he wrote his philosophical work, Soul’s Code, published by Arthur Press, and released the short story, Writer-fortune teller, in September of the same year. “Lai Suo” is a short story released in 1979, which is a representative work of Huang Fan"s early creative trend. The background of most of his works is Taipei, Taiwan’s most modern city as well as its capital. Among the groups of people living actively in every corner of the city, Lai Suo was born in Japanese colonial period. His father was a worker in a malt candy factory run by Japanese military working hard to feed his entire family. When Lai Suo was 18, Japan surrendered and Taiwan was liberated, but Lai Suo’s father lost his job and started a fruit business. At the age of 20, Lai Suo joined Pan Asia Press as a temporary employee. Four months later, when he was caught by Han Zhi Yuan, the big shot, he tumbled into a group called the Taiwan Democratic Progressive Alliance, which advocates for Taiwan’s independence. However, he and his men fled to Japan, and Lai Suo was arrested and imprisoned. He released from prison in 1957 at the age of 30. He got married at the age of 36 and became a head of one household as a father of three children. His wife greatly contributed to gaining his feet. Though his wife had mysophobia, she was a successful real estate agent. In June 1978, after Lai Suo happened to see Mr. Han on television and decided to visit him. Mr. Han is a decisive figure to call this novel a political fable or a political satire. Mr. Han has a political brain, is a good speaker, is good at socializing, has a good personality, and is skilled in politics. He is the master of transformation. He plays a patriot and politician who returned from Japan. When he bumped into Lai Suo (although Lai Suo came to visit), he ignored Lai Suo, who risked his life for him, saying “I don’t know you.” After all, Lai Suo became a victim of the ugly political play of a hypocritical politician like Mr. Han. The work follows Lai Suo"s stream of consciousness and indirectly shows the political and social reality of Taiwan through the absurd life of Lai Suo, who was born prematurely in 1927 and reached fifty in 1978.
