Purpose: One of the characteristics iof Japanese and Japanese culture, reduction-orientedness can be applied to space and time as well as to specific physical objects such as art forms or natural landscapes. The refined architectural beauty, one of the characteristics of Japanese architecture, can be seen as a result of reflecting the omission or reduction of culture or architecture introduced from abroad. This study aims to examine the reduction-oriented spatial characteristics that appear in the Tai-an centered on Tai-an which is considered the best example of Soan Tea room among traditional tea rooms. Method: Based on the history of Tea room architecture and the study of Japanese aesthetic consciousness, the study analyzed the spatial characteristics of Tai-an from four reduction-oriented perspectives: Negative, Quotation, Condensing, Adjustment. Result: In Conclusion, Soan Tea room was a resistance to the authoritative and decorative tendency of Shoin-chasitsu that was popular during the Muromachi peroid and favored frugal appearance and natural materials. Also, Tai-an a Japanese national treasure covered in this study, is a tea room architecture that illustrated the philosophy and characteristics of Soan Tea room.
