Introduction and Background
As new designs of radial head and neck plates are being developed, the results of internal fixation using a plate are reported to be comparable to those of prosthesis replacement in comminuted radial head fracture. However, plate fixation for the fracture is difficult due to the possible posterior interosseous nerve (PIN) injury, and stiff inclination of the radial neck and anatomical variability of the proximal radius causing irritation of the implants.
Material and Method
From January 2006 to April 2019, we retrospectively reviewed 14 adult patients who were treated with low-profile plate fixation through modified anterolateral approach for Mason type III radial head fractures that were crushed into more than three pieces. According to the fracture configuration, intermuscular intervals between brachioradialis, extensor carpi radialis longus, extensor carpi radialis brevis, and extensor digitorum communis were targeted with complete supinator fascial release.
