This paper aims to show that there is a wide cleavage of perception on the Korea-Japan trade conflict between conservatives and progressives in Korea, by analyzing more than one hundred editorial titles from four Korean daily newspapers issued July 1, 2019 through August 10, 2019, two of which are typically conservative and the other two are relatively progressive. It is argued that the cleavage can be attributed to different streams of conceptual metaphors and frames underlying those editorial titles. Whether conservative or progressive, most Koreans commonly conceptualize Japan as well as their own country, Korea, as a person who lives in a community, metaphorically thinking of THE TRADE CONFLICT AS A PHYSICAL BATTLE, in particular considering JAPAN AS A RASCAL. However, conservatives and progressives are sharply opposing in ways they conceive of the current Korean government, its capability to cope, and the best prospective solution. Conservatives tend to think of THE KOREAN GOVERNMENT AS A STUPID BONEHEAD and DEREGULATION AS THE BEST COUNTERMEASURE, while progressives conceive of THE KOREAN GOVERNMENT AS A CONFIDENT FIGHTER and REQUIRED REGULATION AS THE BEST COUNTERMEASURE.
