The key chemical functionality present in the mfps is the postranslationally modified amino acid 3,4-dihydroxy-L-phenylalanine (DOPA). The catecholic moiety of DOPA forms strong and reversible coordination complexes with metal ions and metal oxides or undergoes covalent crosslinking with neighboring chemical moieties.
