Microbes have recently been engineered to be cellular factories with metabolic pathways designed to convert carbon sources, such as sugars, into value-added chemicals and food materials. However, not all fermentation processes are currently applicable for industrial-scale production. This is due to several challenges, such as high feedstock costs and low productivity. Metabolic engineering is an applied science that employs recombinant DNA technology to improve cellular activity.
