The following study was conducted on Cheongju, Chungju, and Jechon cities, which were selected in 2017 as part of the Chungbuk region’s urban regeneration New Deal. In order to analyze the relationship between urban regeneration and social economy, their concepts, characteristics, and research trends were analyzed. In the process, Korean urban regeneration theories and urban regeneration new deal projects were taken into consideration. Recognizing and using the urban regeneration projects’ social roles’ impact on regional communities as the basis, aspects of social economy were categorized into socio-economic criteria to discover the shift in perception before and after 2017.
For the analysis, theoretical models and previous studies were used to create questionnaires for each socio-economic sector. Then residents, citizens, and customers were surveyed.
The study revealed that the public perception of social and economic environment and living environment before and after urban regeneration projects are different for each region. Also, the regeneration project thus far has been confirmed to have an impact in the perception of not only the physical environment, but also the social and economic environment and living environment. Based on this study, further urban regeneration projects should proceed while accommodating the unique regional characteristics.
