The territorial restructuring of the former Soviet Union has altered the geopolitics of Russia’s near abroad, which created new mental maps for Russians. The imaginations of Russia held by Russians are connected to beliefs about what sort of country Russia is (and ought to be), how Russia is viewed in the world and by Russian foreign policy. Understanding Russians’ perceptions of themselves and Russia within the world is a vital part of the larger field of international relations and ‘mental maps’, and speaks to the role of Russia in a world system dominated by the West and led by the United States.
This paper analyzes Russia’s recent efforts to construct a new history curriculum designed to correct alleged historical distortions and to produce a unified historical narrative. Selected textbooks from the publisher Prosveshchenie serve as the sources used to investigate this construction of a standard historical account. Attention will focus on the narrative regarding the incorporation of the Crimean Peninsula into the Russian Federation, which caused particular concern to Russian leaders.
Based on the analysis on three history textbooks, this paper will argue that an approved historical narrative aims to justify the Russian Federation’s aggressive policies for the former Soviet territories and to make new mental maps.
