The purpose of this study is to analysis the environmental design features of G-SEED certified public silver housing and examine the impacts of G-SEED on the health and wellbeing of the elderly residents. For data collection, a thorough literature review and case studies of five G-SEED certified public silver housings have been conducted.
The result of this study is as follows: First, there were common characteristics of five public silver housings such as landscape plants along the housing sites, communal gardens, solar energy uses, recycling centers with roofs, operable windows, barrier-free design, and various community centers. Second, all the common features as mentioned above contribute to residents’ health and wellbeing by promoting physical activities, reducing housing costs, and relieving stress through perceived self-control, social support, and positive distractions.
In conclusion, it is possible to acknowledge the correlations between G-SEED certification and improved health and wellbeing of the elderly. Yet, there was a still a lack of green space and hydrophilic environment, and indoor plants or gardens, and the supply of G-SEED certified public silver housing in Seoul should also be increased.
