This study investigates the generational changes of phonetic properties in the prosody of North Kyungsang Korean (henceforth, NKK) which might have arisen due to younger generation’s loss of long vowels (Kim 2018). Younger NKK speakers’ tone realization was compared with that of older NKK speakers for the contrasts between HH and HL accent; between a long and a short high tone by examining the F0 range, F0 contour, and F0 alignment in data collected from 19 NKK speakers (9 older; 10 younger). The results revealed that younger NKK speakers differed from older NKK speakers in phonetic patterns in terms of word-initial high tones for the NKK accent contrasts. Younger NKK speakers’ F0 maximum and F0 minimum values were higher for the HH type than for the HL type, which differs from older NKK speakers’ patterning, where their F0 ranges were higher for the HL type than for the HH type. In addition, younger NKK speakers did not maintain an F0 alignment distinction for the accent contrast, revealing that their F0max appeared earlier overall than older speakers’ timing, making no distinction for the accent contrast. These findings suggest that younger NKK speakers’ acoustic distinction has been reduced−that is, more simplified but less distinct for the accent contrasts−compared to that of older NKK speakers. This indicates that younger NKK speakers should be adjusting their acoustic properties by reducing the acoustic cues for the two-way distinction (HH; HL), responding to losing the vowel length contrast.
