Objective: this study is aimed to investigate the workload level of reactor start-up operation in nuclear power plants. Background In order to select tasks to be automated from the whole start-up operation, it is critical to figure out the level of operator workload for the startup operational tasks. In this study, operator workload for each task of the start-up procedure was evaluated. Method: In this study, subjective matter experts(SMEs) evaluated workload on the basis of their experience and knowledge. Five (5) experienced and licensed operators were participated in this evaluation. Their average operating experience is over 30 years. They were asked to evaluate workload for each procedure section, sub-section and sub-sub-section of the start-up procedures. Results: There is no big deviation between evaluation scores to any tasks. Start-up tasks with the highest workload (evaluation score= 7.6) were identified. They are different from tasks which usually considered as difficult work. Conclusion: Identified tasks with high workload should be verified the feasibility of their automation. Application: The results of this study are expected to contribute to determine what tasks of start-up operation can be automated at first.
