Despite the worldwide prevalence of depression, the risk of developing this condition has not been fully understood yet. The purpose of this cross-sectional study is to examine the dietary patterns related to depressive symptoms based on the 7<SUP>th</SUP> Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (2016). A total of 2,360 participants (both sexes, aged 19~64 years) were included in the analysis. Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9) tool was used to diagnose depressive symptoms and assess severity. Subjects were categorized into no-mild depressive symptom (NMDS) (0~9 points) and moderate-severe depressive symptom (MSDS) (≥10 points) groups according to PHQ-9 score. A principal component analysis to extract information on three dietary patterns (Seaweeds and Vegetables Pattern, Rice and Noodles Pattern, and Nuts and Soup Pattern) were employed. After adjusting confounding factors (sex, age, education, economic activity status, economic level, family type, diabetes diagnosis, arthritis diagnosis, working hours/week, sleep hours per day, self-reported stress perception, smoking history, and frequency of breakfast per week), current study verified that the tertile 2 of the Seaweeds and Vegetables pattern were positively associated with reduced depressive symptoms (AOR 2=0.480, 95% CI=0.251, 0.918) compared to the tertile 1. In sum, this study derived meaningful foundation to analyze the relationship between depressive symptoms and diet, and suggest that long-term follow-up studies for the future.
