This study analyzes the contents of the popular Chinese drama 〈Ode to joy〉 from the first half of 2016, various relationships between characters and people around their various episodes that occurred in the workplace and life, and examines the social status of China and the emerging class and values of the “The New middle class”. Literature reflects and leads the times. Every literary work is another world created by the imagination of the author on the basis of reality, through which the creator tries to show how to accept the reality of the time and how to solve problems and conflicts, and the inmates also recognize the creator’s intention in the face of contemporary situations and sympathize directly and indirectly with the times. TV dramas are a good medium that beautifully embodies today’s social phenomena and values of members, and their ripple effects and influence are very great.
Given that dramas can shed more stark light on reality and arouse sympathy from many people along with movies, I think dramas that reveal China’s current social situation in China are very valuable materials for us to understand and study China. In this sense, the drama 〈Ode to joy〉 is a wonderful portrayal of Shanghai, a metropolis where everyone wants to go, live, but no one can easily settle down and live a stable life, entering the mainstream society and struggling to rise to a higher class, finding self and happiness in countless intertwined human relationships, and eventually harmonizing and singing a hymn of joy.
