This paper examines Victorian lower class women and vocations in George Eliot’s Adam Bede. In this story, Eliot searches the restrictions in education, class, and vocation imposed on the major female characters. Adam Bede, Eliot’s first novel, focuses on Dinah’s marriage and Hetty’s exile. Hetty Sorrel is a lower-middle class dairymaid who has a strong desire for social ascendance, aspiring to become a lady. Her tragic fate is attributed largely to her failure to understand Victorian society’s strict hierarchical class system. Dinah Morris, a woman-preacher, is willing to give up a quasi-public life to marry Adam Bede. Her marriage suggests a kind of alternative to vocation. However, in the novel, Eliot faithfully reflects the social reality of Victorian women of the day, successfully showing their aspirations, frustrations, and compromises with reality. This seems to reflect the achievement of women most realistically in the gender ideology of the Victorian era.
