Social innovation, as an alternative to the government or market failure, refers to the approach of local communities, civic groups, experts, and governments to solve social problems through cross-sector collaboration. Akin to other countries, innovative attempts in Korea occur continuously at the levels of local communities, cities, and the country. In this paper, we aim to explore the keywords and trends of social innovation projects in Korea through social network analysis and compare them to the elements of social innovation classified by Caulier-Grice et al. (2012) to identify the network characteristics. To achieve this, we filter 1,671 words and 5,072 words-project links to analyze 115 social innovation projects introduced at the annual event called “Social Innovation SSIN” of 2018 and 2019, organized by the Ministry of the Interior and Safety. We investigate the trend of social innovation projects by applying keyword analysis, topic modeling analysis, topic-keyword network analysis, and topic-project network analysis using the network analysis software named NetMiner 4. More than visualizing the word cloud, we illustrate the changes and developments of project networks over two years. Keywords from social innovation projects in 2018 include “cooperation, people, solutions, community, diversity, young people, design, operation, neighborhood, culture, and life”, reflecting community efforts to solve the problems through various local programs. Similarly, keywords in 2019 not only contain “innovation, collaboration, region, people, and community”, but also include “city, data, technology, and labor”, implying an expansion of the physical scope of the projects to urban scale with the technology. With these keywords, the topics in 2018 were titled: “work-life balance, living lab, community revitalization, young people’s community activities, and aging society”. In 2019, the topics were designated “solutions using data, collaboration between the government and communities, innovation through Information Technology, local cultural projects by young people, and community-based innovation projects”. Through this study, we derived various keywords of the projects to identify the characteristics of social innovation projects and suggest implications for future support for a sustainable social innovation ecosystem.
