The purpose of this study is to understand how COVID-19 has affected the job stress rates of early childhood teachers. This study first analyzes the differences in the job stress rates of teachers before and after the COVID-19 pandemic, and examines the relationship between job stress rates and different teachers’ personal characteristics. This study also aims to examine how different infection prevention strategies have affected teachers" job stress rates. The survey was conducted among 216 early childhood teachers working in Seoul and Gyeonggi Province, from between July and September 2020. The collected data were analyzed using frequency, percentage, T-test, one–way ANOVA, and simple regression analysis with the use of SPSS WIN 26.0. The findings of this study are as follows. Firstly, the job stress rates of early childhood teachers became higher after the outbreak of COVID-19 when compared to the rates before COVID-19, with an additionally significant effect on the task overload factor (t=3.12(p<.01)). Secondly, the results showed that the higher the average age of the teacher, and the greater the experience level of the teacher, the higher their job stress rate. In addition, there were significant differences in the work overload level depending on the teacher’s academic background, relationship with colleagues, and average student age. Lastly, infection prevention strategies implemented at daycare centers had a significant impact on job stress rates. This study provides meaningful findings which could provide information for future strategies which would support measures that reduce the job stress of early childhood teachers during times of crisis such as the COVID-19 pandemic.
