A team students studying in Communications Design (CMD), Environmental and Interior Design (EDI), Industrial and Interactive Design (IID), and Museum Studies from Syracuse University developed “Displaced Destruction - Searching for Home” a design proposal for the United Nations Pavilion at the 2020 World Expo in Dubai (later, this expo was postponded to 2021 due to COVID-19 pandemic). This paper describes the process, collaboration, and design thinking that culminated in the final UN pavilion design. The entire project was rolled out in stages amongst the multiple disciplines; starting with CMD and Museum Studies, a clear narrative was developed to convey the story of troubles facing displaced people around the world, a global problem addressed in the UN’s 2030 17 Sustainable Development Goals. The narratives were then presented to EDI, who then took the verbal and visual narratives into the 3D space, developing plan drawings and 3D renderings, along with the procurement of furniture, lighting, and materials for the exhibit. During the design process, IID consulted with EDI to provide advice on improvements to the designed human interaction and ergonomics. At the conclusion of the project, CMD and EDI had the opportunity to travel to NYC and present each design to the 2020 World Expo committee at the UN.
