The facade of the building is the interface connecting the indoor and outdoor environment, and the key factor that determines the internal comfort. Undoubtedly facades plays a major role to the built environment and imageability of the building. Architecture and building industry is looking in sustainable and innovative solutions on how facade could contribute to the world energy consumption and carbon emissions. Additive Manufacturing is the key process that opens to a fascinating new computational world that allows us to explore better performance with reliable efficient materials. 3D/4D printing technologies for facades provides special features by saving time with precise construction and reduction in labour and construction waste. AM provides the potential to explore complex forms and shapes in exterior building design without any restrictions where traditional facades were imagined only as a static solution that controls indoor environment. Nevertheless AM requires a proper understanding of its process, work flow, materials and applications on how to approach it for facades. This study will introduce the basic concepts of 3D and 4D printing technology with its process and materials and also its applications in building facades. This study also discuss the possible sustainable changes that these technology could influence in the development of facades through recently built pioneering cases.
