Recently, a few researchers reported the presence of two-phase bubbles of R600a refrigerant at the inlet of the capillary tube of refrigeration cycles under subcooled condition. This non-equilibrium state affects the cooling capacity, mass flow rate, and refrigeration cycle performance. In the present study, the effects of ambient temperature (15 to 35 ℃) and R600a charge amount (65 to 170 g) on the refrigerant state at the inlet of the capillary tubes were investigated. A parallel two-circuit cycle refrigerator-freezer was selected for the experimental study and a transparent tube was installed at the inlet of the capillary tubes for visualization of the refrigerant state. Visualization results for most of the experiments showed the presence of a non-equilibrium state at the inlet of the capillary tubes under the subcooled condition while the refrigerant temperature was lower than the corresponding saturation temperature. The experimental mass flow rates were compared with dimensionless empirical correlations. The experimental mass flow rates were compared with values predicted using Rasti et al. and Wolf and Pate empirical correlations. Both correlations could predict the mass flow rate with large and acceptable deviations under the non-equilibrium state and fully-liquid state, respectively. Visualization results showed that when the deviation of the Rasti et al. correlation was lower than 25%, the refrigerant state was fully-liquid at the inlet of the capillary tubes.
