Recently, with the development of information and communication technologies and industries, the demand for data and computer center buildings has also increased. Unlike general buildings, buildings for computer center have very large amount heat generated by computing equipment, so it is general that its effect on the air conditioning load is dominant. That is, the cooling load in summer is very large compared to that of ordinary buildings, and it is common to perform cooling, not heating, in winter season. However, this fact is not considered in the Korean regulation for energy-saving design of domestic buildings, and only very high insulation standards are enforced. This is expected to result in the increased energy load in winter season compared to the reduction of the cooling load in summer, resulting in wasted energy. In this study, simple calculations and numerical experiments were performed to analyze the effect of the insulation level of a data center building on energy consumption. The annual energy consumption rate was analyzed with variation of parameters such as insulation thickness and heat generated by computing equipment. The optimal insulation level of the domestic computer center building targeted for this study was compared with the current domestic insulation standard. While the cooling load increased in summer, the cooling load in winter decreased, and as results, it was predicted that over 20% of cooling load was saved.
