Five Calls is a well-known christian Chinese novel in the late Qing Dynasty and the Republic of China. It was translated by American missionary Laura White and a Chinese named Chen Chunsheng. The original work is the novelette Marchez Pendant Que Vous Avez La Lumière(French, meaning “Walk While the Day Lasts”)by Leo Tolstoy. With the reputation of "China"s new Pilgrim"s Progress", it tells the story of the protagonist Lin Jiuru"s journey to heaven and the paradise "Peace Village" after five times of vigilance in his life. The discovery of Five Calls provides a new text for the study of Tolstoy"s early translations in China. Tolstoy"s original work was written in 1886. In 1902, Laura White provided a synopsis of the story for Chen Chunsheng, and he used the localization translation strategy to rewrite the original work. The "great love of God" in the original work is shown as "benevolence" in the Five Calls. The paradise on the ground in the original work also presents the ideal home image with Chinese colour in the Five Calls. The "art" in the original work aims to realize God"s will, while the Five Calls adds art as the purpose of improving society. The original work emphasizes "love" as the purpose of God, while Five Calls emphasizes love under the condition of equality between men and women. As far as "death" is concerned, the original work focuses on the joy of death, while the Five Calls highlights the "great meaning" of death. The translation process of Five Calls embodies the original missionary strategy. In the process of striving for believers to pursue the way to heaven, Five Calls found a balance between the popular and vivid novels and the boring preaching of doctrines.
