The Korean industries today, especially manufacturing and construction industries have met the difficulty to employ the manpower needed in their plants since last several years. It has been general tendency that people do not want to have their jobs which require mainly physical and manipulative activities in the plant. Even though the Korean Education Law states that work education should be emphasized for the purpose of cultivating children as the effective producers and wise consumers, there seems to be not many educational practioners excuting the work education programme in their schools. The purpose of this study is to clarify the meaning of work and the significance of work in educational programmes. The study was done through the reviewing literatures and interviewing professional personnel. The meaning of work clarified in the study is that the practical human activities under self-controled to produce the new value. The practical human activities include both mental and physical activity. The practical activities under self-controled mean that there are no pure physical activities. The significances of work in education clarified in the study are as the followings. (1) The work activities well organized in the school programme help children both in health and physical development. (2) The work activities well organized in school programme help children mental and intellectual development. (3) The work activities well organized in school programme help children morality and sociality develpment. (4) The work activities well organized in school programe help children positivity and practivity development. (5) The work activities well organized in school programme help children aesthetic development.
