Friction-working which is one of the precision finishing methods makes the surface smooth effectively by sliding motion under the pressure of the hard material to the soft material. The minimum surface roughness and the optimum working conditions when the medium carbon steels of the various surface structure were friction-worked with the tungsten carbide were compared in this paper. Lublication oil for machine tool were used in friction-working and the surface roughness of specimen was kept to be constant at 0.3μ Ra with the grinding process in this study. main results were obtained as follow; 1) If the structure and hardness of midium carbon steel varied with heat-treatment, though their chemical compositions are same, the inflection points apear at different position as the method or the degree of heat-treatment. 2) The magnitude of contact load does not depend upon hardness only. 3) The minimum surface roughness of hardened carbon steel is worse than that of carbon steel which is not hardened. 4) Even if the hardness of medium carbon steel become higher with heat treatment, the optimum values of contact load to be minimum surface roughness are almost between 30-40㎏, and the optimum sliding speed is 150~250m/min. at material 1 and 150m/min., 100m/min. at each material 2, material 3.
