Lesser yang person-Hyungbangpaedok-san (HBPDS) is a prescription originated in the <Longevity and Life Preservation in Eastern Medicinewritten by Je-Ma Lee who was Korean physician of the late Chosun Dynasity. Generally, HBPDS has been used for the treatment of Lesser yang (Shao yang) person's 'exterior cold disease induced from the spleen affected by cold. In the present study, we investigated the effect of aqueous extract of the HBPDS against lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced inflammation by using 3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide (MTT) assay, prostaglandin E2 (PGE2) immunoassay, and nitric oxide (NO) detection in mouse BV2 microglial cells. In the present results, the aqueous extract of HBPDS suppresses PGE2 synthesis and nitric oxide (NO) production and also inhibits the LPS-induced cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) in mouse BV2 cells. These results demonstrate that HBPDS can be used as a valuable therapy for the treatment of allergic disease, pain, and inflammation.
