This paper analyzes the content and formal aspects of Pawel Pawlikowski’s film Cold War. Pawel Pawlikowski seems to make good use of the aesthetic features of the film’s 1.33:1 aspect ratio. The director effectively uses horizontal and vertical images in a frame with limited sides rather than widescreen, and deliberate asymmetry and subdivision of subdivision ratios produce aesthetic effects that are difficult to achieve on widescreen. The director also uses the aesthetic features peculiar to black and white films. With the selection of appropriate saturation according to backlighting, light effects, and black and white spectra, it visually depicts the depth of the screen, the distance between the characters, and the psychological state of the characters. In essence, it belongs to the melodrama, an eternal classic genre. It borrows the love of men and women and the theme of overcoming suffering, which is a classic technique of maximizing the melodramas. However, this universal theme doubles the emotions of the work because it uses the motifs of art to describe the political and social situation of socialist Poland and the situation that Eastern European countries had to face during the socialist period. As we saw in the analysis above, Pawlikowski, who understands the film language better than anyone else, has created a masterpiece that captures classic themes and content in a film form that is exceptional.
