This paper aims to reveal pragmatic functions of the Korean grammatical construction e kaciko in sequential contexts. Although e kaciko, unlike the connective ese, is exceedingly frequent in more informal and intimately constructed discourses, it is also distributed in formal discourses. Therefore, we examined formal and informal texts collected from the Sejong Corpus: Present Day Spoken Korean and web-based texts including mass media broadcasts, focusing on the emergence of e kaciko. Results showed that the grammatical construction e kaciko turns out to have distinctive applications across discourses. First, a closer analysis of uses of e kaciko in formal discourses evidently indicated the speaker’s intention to ‘deformalize the tone of discourse’ in formal settings. The second type of e kaciko usage was found when the speaker expressed her or his personal associations or attitudes toward ‘what is said’ or to the addressee. These sequential contexts mostly concerned troublesome situations. Therein, e kaciko carried the speaker’s intention in relation to uttering the time expressions, and such a meaning was context-induced. Therefore, the interlocutor was required to decode the use of e kaciko in accordance with the given context.
