This study aims to investigate the pronunciation patterns and changes of ‘ㅢ’ in the Jeonnam dialect from the viewpoint of the dialectal change and the influence of the standard dialect. The results of the study are as follows: the changes of ‘ㅢ’ in the Jeonnam dialect vary depending on the position in the word and also vary lexically. It is highly likely that ‘ㅢ’ in the word-initial position, regardless of generation, is pronounced as /ɯ/, the unique phonetic form of the Jeonnam dialect. The complex vowel in a non-word-initial position is actively changed to the standard dialect form /i/ in all generations. On the other hand, changes of ‘ㅢ’ in a lexical morpheme vary depending on particular words. ‘ㅢ’ is most likely to be separable, followed by /ɯ/, whereas /i/ is less likely to be separable. The adnominal case marker, -uy, one of the grammatical morphemes, goes through different changes in different generations unlike in lexical morphemes. The youths tend to change it to the standard dialect form, whereas seniors tend to keep the Jeonnam dialectal form.
