(Background and Purpose) Needless to say, in developing a design materials are one of the most important factors. Recreating space or products that have already been used requires more creativity and work processes than using new materials. Rescue Earth (RE), a Korean eco-friendly company, is developing designs using waste wood. While the group, located in Jeju Island, has steadily walked on one path for 10 years from 2009 to present, it has recreated and reused a lot of wood just before disposal to develop sustainable design. In particular, the reuse design that RE pursues is closely related to Retro and Newtro, which are emerged as new design trends today. They spread a new paradigm in design by applying the concept of Retro, which uses old things in their original forms, and Neutro, which reinterprets old things, to design. The background of RE design is the urgent need for expert insight into the availability of sustainable materials in the design world along with designers' social responsibility to manage reusable resources. In this study, we try to find ways to activate the reuse design through their design processes and characteristics on the premise that the eco-friendly RE's reuse design can be an alternative to the sustainable design. (Method) For this study, an about 3-hour interview with CEO of the RE is conducted at its exhibition hall after visiting RE's material factory on August 14, 2019. We try to derive improvements for the reuse design through the interview which should include the direction and philosophy of their design, the purchase path of materials and design process, and future plans and suggestions. (Results) The eco-friendly group RE realizes the sustainable design centering on waste wood generated in Jeju Island. Their design strategy is as follows. First, only old wood used indoors should be used as a main material in principle. Second, it should create an artistic value manually by fully utilizing the beauty of old wood. Third, it should provide consumers with comfort by producing minimalist and functional designs rather than complex and decorative designs. Fourth, it should pursue a design of stability and of structural beauty with traditional wooden joints rather than with a metal processing technology. Fifth, they provide reasonable prices for the corporate philosophy to be well expressed rather than used commercially. (Conclusions) An on/off line distribution system is essential for the continuous supply of waste materials for a sustainable space environment. In addition, waste materials should be recognized and accessed in a comprehensive and systematic way, for which we need to present a systematic method that can be applied by anyone easily.

(연구배경 및 목적) 디자인을 개발하는 데 있어 재료는 두말할 나위 없이 중요한 요소 중 하나이다. 더군다나 이미 사용했던 공간 또는 제품을 다시 활용하여 재탄생시키는 작업이야말로 새로운 재료를 사용하는 것보다 더욱더 창의적인 작업과 공정과정이 필요하다고 할 수 있다. 국내 친환경 기업 RE(Rescue Earth)는 폐목재를 활용하여 디자인을 개발하고 있다. 2009년부터 현재까지 10년간 꾸준히 한 길을 걸어온 그룹으로 제주도에 거주하면서 지속가능한 디자인 개발을 위해 폐기 직전의 수많은 목재들을 다시 활용하여 새롭게 재탄생키고 있다. 특히, RE에서 추구하고 있는 재사용 디자인은 오늘날 새로운 디자인 트렌드로 자리잡고 있는 레트로(Retro)와 뉴트로(Newtro)와도 밀접한 연관성이 있다. 옛것을 그대로 활용하는 레트로와 옛것을 새롭게 재해석한 뉴트로의 개념을 디자인에 적용함으로써 뉴패러다임의 디자인을 확산시키고 있다. 이와 같은 RE의 디자인 배경으로는 재사용 가능한 자원을 관리하는 디자이너의 사회적인 책임과 함께 디자인계에 제공할 수 있는 지속가능한 재료의 활용가능성에 대한 전문가의 통찰력이 다급히 필요하게 되었기 때문이다. 이를 위해 본 연구에서는 친환경 기업 RE가 추구하는 재사용 디자인이 환경을 지속시킬 수 디자인의 대안이 될 수 있다는 전제하에, 그들의 디자인 과정과 특성을 통해 재사용 디자인의 활성화를 위한 방안을 모색하고자 한다. (연구방법) 본 연구를 위해 2019년 8월 14일, 약 3시간에 걸쳐 RE의 재료공장 방문 후 전시장에서 RE의 대표와의 인터뷰를 실시한다. 인터뷰 내용으로는 그들이 추구하는 디자인의 방향과 철학, 재료의 구입경로와 디자인과정 그리고 향후 계획 및 제언 등을 통해 재사용 디자인의 활용을 위한 개선점을 도출하고자 한다. (결과) 친환경 그룹 RE는 제주도에서 발생하고 있는 폐목재를 중심으로 지속가능한 디자인을 실현하고 있다. 그들의 디자인 전략은 다음과 같다. 첫째, 주재료로 사용하고 있는 목재는 반드시 실내에서 사용되었던 오래된 목재를 재사용하는 것을 원칙으로 한다. 둘째, 수작업을 통해 오래된 목재의 미를 충분히 살림으로써 예술적 가치를 창출한다. 셋째, 복잡하고 장식적인 디자인보다는 미니멀하고 기능적인 디자인을 제작함으로써 소비자들에게 편암함을 제공한다. 넷째, 금속류를 사용하는 가공기술보다는 원목과 원목이 서로 교차하는 전통적인 연결기법을 추구함으로써 안정감과 구조미가 있는 디자인을 추구한다. 다섯째, 상업적으로 이용하기보다는 기업의 철학이 잘 나타날 수 있도록 합리적인 가격을 제공하고 있다. (결론) 지속가능한 공간환경을 위한 폐자재의 지속적인 공급을 위해 온오프라인상의 유통체계는 반드시 필요하다. 또한 포괄적이고 체계적인 방법으로 폐자재를 인식하고 접근할 수 있도록 해야 하며, 누구나 쉽게 적용할 수 있는 방법을 체계화시켜 제시할 필요가 있다.
