The dramaturgy of Yeats’s The Death of Cuchulain lends itself to achieving the effect of eliciting nationalism, making the audience associate the play with Homer’s epics. Yet, it deviates in terms of dramaturgy from the conventional way of invoking patriotism in the audience by using the Old Man’s narration, Emer’s dance, and the Street-Singer’s song and by meticulous use of contrasting imagery and characterization. This paper discusses how Yeats chooses a unique way of eliciting nationalism through dramaturgic approach.
