This article investigated the international exchange patterns and the perception on world by 洪貴達 who was one of the top class intellects in the 15th century of Joseon era. While interacting with the envoys such as 祁順‧艾璞‧王獻臣 as a title of a reception officer and a secretarial officer, he had expressed a pride for the civilization status of his own nation. In the exchange with envoys from Vietnam, he displayed amicable emotion to them under the perception that both Joseon and Vietnam are the nations in Confucianism. The intellects at the time including 洪貴達 acknowledged the litterateurs who were in the nations of the same Confucianism boundary and interacted with them, however they exhibited discriminatory attitudes against those from the neighboring non-Confucian nations such as Tibet. The same was applied to Japan that was Buddhist nation. A farewell poem written by 洪貴達 when interacting with 道誾, a Japanese monk, revealed his mind that Joseon is the Confucian nation superior to Japan and his intention to turn Japan that reveres Buddhism into Confucianism. As shown in 《混一疆理歷代國都之圖》in which even Europe and Africa were illustrated, the intellects of early Joseon period had a wider global perception at least in the geographic perspective compared to those of the late Joseon period. However, there were prominent limitations, for instance, China was depicted as the center of a world, Joseon was drawn in a great magnitude and surrounding nations were illustrated in small scale. This implies that China and Joseon were thought to be a core of the world and other areas were deemed as just surrounding nations. In the late Joseon period, not only the geographic perception but also the global perception of the intellects has become even narrower than this due to the intensified China centric view. Investigation on this is a task for future studies.
