The Presbyterian Church in the Republic of Korea (PROK) has suggested its fundamental principle on international cooperation in the 38th General Assembly statement in 1953: “PROK avoids narrow isolationism, thereby pursuing ecumenical spirit in partnership with world Christians.” In this principle, PROK has adopted “partnership in mission,” based on the theological foundations of “Missio Dei” and “Justice, Peace, and the Integrity of Creation (JPIC).” This direction seeks to build a shalom community in this world as well as in the church. However, this is not the unique issue of the Christian community itself. In the previous half-century, global communities continued to plan policies for human developments and ecological improvements in solidarity with relevant organizations and agencies. Particularly, the 70th session of the UN General Assembly in 2015 established the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and determined its possible implementations in various ways by 2030. The new agenda provided a shared blueprint for five Ps — people, planet, prosperity, peace, and partnership — and suggested 17 core goals and the associated 169 targets to make this creation better and sustainable.
In order to accomplish those goals, Christian sectors as well as governments and civil societies have actively taken part in several areas of the SDGs. In partnership with various public and civil cooperation networks, global ecumenical agents such as World Council of Churches and Evangelical Mission in Solidarity have tried to implement specific areas of SDGs according to the framework of JPIC. As an actor of their ecumenical partners, PROK needs to raise questions: how it can contribute to the agenda in a rapidly changing situation of global societies and ecumenical organizations and how it can develop and enhance its capacity-building for more efficient ecumenical cooperation. This research tries to restructure an ecumenical system and international policy of PROK in the SDGs era and examine possible expectations and characteristics of a fresh framework of JPIC-SDGs.
