In this paper I argue that the common perception of Chosen society, that is one dominated by a strong sense of propriety and decorum as dictated by the Nee-Confucian belief system, is only partially correct. Beneath the surface of "official" Chosen society was another set of values and beliefs that was dominated by common human emotions such as passion and sexuality. Although this "unofficial" aspect of society had been marginalized by the official discourse, the people found one outlet for their desires in humorous narratives of sexual activities.
Particularly, humor allowed writers to record and transmit narratives about sexuality that otherwise would have been taboo. The humor in these tales helped the official discourse to be subverted and permitted these otherwise proscribed stories to circulate in society. Moreover, humor made it possible to share these stories in various settings: they could be read or retold orally. In short, humor permitted these narratives of marginalized activities, i.e., passion and sexuality outside the bounds of marriage, to challenge the official discourse prohibiting such pursuits.
