In 1917, the Korean Buddhist priest Han Yongun (1879-1944) had a remarkable experience which he hastily recorded in a short verse which he prefaced with: "1917, twelfth month, third day. Around ten 0' clock at night, as I sat in Zen meditation, I suddenly heard the wind knock something over. My doubts were instantly resolved. Also, I obtained this poem."
At first glance, what he wrote was simply a conventional "song of enlightenment." Yet underlying his twenty-eight-syllable verse were several other poems all of which were integral to the way in which he envisioned his experience. Of these, the voices of a Chinese scholar and a Japanese priest are the clearest. Yet it is the voice of another Japanese, only faintly heard, that is perhaps the most important.
Later a friend suggested to Han a seemingly slight aesthetic modification which, in turn, altered what he had originally conveyed. This modification also introduced another appropriate voice to this poem: yet this voice was that of a Korean whose ghost had, several centuries earlier, assassinated a political opponent squatting in a toilet at a Buddhist temple.
This article will discuss the literary foundations of Han Yongun's enlightenment verse and the rather complex story that it tells. In bringing this story to the foreground, I will also attempt to cast light on the character of his religious vision.
