The purpose of this study was as attempt to understand the Japanese colonial rule and context of the later era through the life history of a cyclist and a bicycle master. Lee Hong buk was purposefully chosen to Understand life of Korea athletic. To his end, a life history approach was chosen. Data was collected using historical bicycle documents including articles, new papers, personal documents, pictures and magazines. Interview was conducted three times. Data were analyzed inductively. Lee HongBuk’s life history result showed that the four domains. First, It was possible to understand the difficult context of the Japanese occupation and the life as an athlete, Second, it was possible to understand the secret meaning of the individual representing country, that is, the national representative. Third, there was a conflict between life and institution as an individual thinks of an athlete. Lastly, according to difficult times, the roles and expertise acquired naturally that made him to be a bicycle master. Through the personal story of Lee HongBuk, it was possible to understand the lives of athletes befere and after the Japanese occupation and the meaning of the national team.
