The valley degree of freedom has recently emerged as a new quantum degree of freedom of electrons in 2-dimensional (2D) semiconductors such as transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) in addition to charge and spin. The possibility to control electrons by the valley degree of freedom has opened a new field, called valleytronics, for the next-generation information processing and data storage. Here we present some fundamental principles of valley-dependent electron control in 2D TMDs and review recent progress on valleytronics with an emphasis on electrical manipulation.
