This research analyzes media reports about sexual violence to uncover hidden ideologies against female victims with data from news reports of 2019. Despite the abundance of research criticizing the way the media handles the sexual assault cases, the aspect of the reports has changed over time. There is a marked decrease in more obvious victim-blaming or sexist discourse in the media. This research implements detailed linguistic analysis to reveal a more subtle version of sexism embedded in the media discourse. Using the framework suggested by van Leeuwen (2008), this project analyzes components of the sexual assault and its participants. This analysis has revealed that the media often sensationalizes the crime by over-exposing its details and applying a near pornographic-level of description. It also establishes and consolidates rape myths that the victim is to be blamed on one hand, while simultaneously strengthening the concept of a “weak female victim without agency” on the other hand.
