The aim of this paper is to explore Calvin’s thoughts on the public nature of the Reformed church centered around his insights on ‘Christ-centered anthropology’ stemming from his life and works. When approached from this perspective, Calvin’s idea on ‘the union with Christ’ and ‘double grace’ can show how believers, as the body of Christ, can participate in the public good within the church and without.
Over the last generation, Christians in Korea have suffered from the deepening privatization of the Church and its internal and external effects. In response to this trend, both “the public nature” and “the public good” have emerged as major church issues in today’s Korean society in order to prevent church leaders’ abuse of ecclesiastical authority, as well as to recover the spiritual respect as the body of Christ for the world. To tackle this widening practice, Korean Christians need to urgently lay a theological foundation for the ‘public nature’ and the ‘public good’ in order to overcome the church persons’ pursuit of private interests that prevail within and without the church, as well as to establish communal values and practices that they should follow in everyday life. In particular, considering the situation of the Reformed tradition and the Presbyterian Church, the task of analyzing and evaluating ‘the public good’ from the perspective of Calvin’s life and ideas is mandatory.
To this end, this paper extracts and analyzes important discussions that Calvin expresses. This article first briefly examines the main aspects of Calvin’s life that sought to restore the church’s public good. This article also looks at how Calvin’s ‘Christ-centered anthropology’ contributes to the church’s public character by examining Christ as the model of the public good, the public implication of the believer’s union with Christ, and the Christian’s public participation as a renewed communal humanity. In doing so, this paper suggests the ontological and historical significance of ‘Christ-centered anthropology’ as a theological foundation that can contribute to the restoration of the internal and external public nature of today’s Korean church.
