This study prospects that the development of artificial intelligence technology would lead to the development and utilization of the Empathic Artificial Intelligence Counselor (EAIC) in the future, reflecting the ethical implications that could arise if the EAIC counsels human clients. In particular, as recent research on convergence between neuroscience and psychology has increased the likelihood of the emergence of the EAIC, the purpose of this study is to introduce the latest international convergence researches and compare them with existing psychological theories to look at ethical problems and countermeasures when the EAIC is used in reality.
This study conducted the following investigations. First, this paper introduced the latest researches in the field of neuroscience for empathy and that of artificial intelligence research by critically examining and introducing it to domestic academia. Second, the possibility of the emergence of the EAIC was examined, and analyzed and how the EAIC could lead to empathic counseling by collecting and analyzing emotional and psychological information of human clients. Third, various forms of artificial intelligence counseling that would appear online and offline were predicted, examples that can be used to counsel human clients were presented, and their effects and problems were evaluated and analyzed. For more in-depth analysis to the issues of AI counseling will require preemptive joint research in related fields such as ethics, counseling, cognitive science, artificial intelligence and robotics.
