This paper is a response to an earlier study (Park, 2017), which questioned the status of one step of “stating the value of the present research” in Swales’ (2004) move-step model. This step was one of the seven steps comprising the third and last move (Presenting the present work) in the model. Value-laden words have been found in other steps such as a step of summarizing methods. It would be of interest to identify entities evaluated positively without limiting value statements to one specific step. This study explored what entities involve the value of the writer’s research and how the entities are highlighted. The study examined 20 research article introductions in the sub-disciplines of applied linguistics: citation, first person pronouns, modality, and theme/rheme. The examination focused on Move 3 in Swales’ (2004) move-step model, against Move 1 (Establishing a territory) and Move 2 (Establishing a niche). This study shows that entities highlighted to promote “the present research” concerned research and the real world. Additionally, the entities and their features differed across steps of the Move 3.
