Vishal Bhardwaj’s adapted film Haider relocates Hamlet in Kashmir in 1995, when the conflict between the Kashmiri separatists and the Indian government reached its peak. The film transforms a Danish revenge tragedy into a Kashmiri human tragedy. Bhardwaj’s concept of the human tragedy is in line with his attempt to portray the grim actualities of civic life in Kashmir on screen for the first time in the history of Bollywood. He tries not to align himself with a typical demonstration of Indian nationalist narratives, but address the question of the ongoing infringement on human rights by Indian security forces.
This paper intends to show that the film’s poignant depiction of the Kashmir conflict has more to do with the human conflict, and that what it underscores is the relevance of the human conflict to a localized experience at a particular historical moment. Haider/Hamlet is involved in the regional situation taking a journey in search for his missing father. His journey is assisted by Arshia/Ophelia the journalist who leads him to witness unrecognized casualties of the insurgency. On finding the truth about what happened to his father he is torn between the fatherly command for, and the motherly renunciation of, vengeance. It is Ghazala/Gertrude who commits suicide by detonating a vest of grenades planted on her body, thereby finally sets her son free from revenge, and protects him from death.
Thus Bhardwaj’s approach to the human tragedy places Arshia and Ghazala on the center stage: they work as ethical and political imperatives to equip Haider to understand and engage with the world as it should be.
