The situations of traditional culture, architectural style, and natural conditions are kinds of similar. Japan is an Asian country with earlier color planning. Therefore, studying and exploring the evolution process and successful experience of Japanese architectural color protection has valuable learning and reference significance for China. Based on the historical and cultural color of Japanese and Chinese architecture, this study uses field research and color measurement to grasp the color characteristics of the two. At the same time, through literature review and policy analysis, this paper will summarize Japan"s successful measures and methods for the protection of historical and cultural residential buildings. Moreover, explore its implications for China. First of all, this article takes the Machiya of Kyoto, Japan, and the Tulou of Fujian, China, as the research objects, and compares the colors through field research to find the similarity of color between Kyoto Machiya and Fujian Tulou. Secondly, by analyzing the color measures of the color protection of Kyoto Machiya in Japan and the color characteristics of the field research, this article summarizes Japan"s successful measures and methods for the protection of historical and cultural buildings. Finally, because the colors in Machiya and the Tulou due were similar to each other as previous studies have shown. This paper, therefore, presents the guidance on the color protection of the Tulou building in Fujian.
