This study sought to determine Joseon-era travel diaries focused on island travel. Joseon-era travel diaries focused on island travel were found to number 48 pieces. Chapter Ⅱ presents the chronical order thereof. They consisted of 3 pieces from the 16th century, 7 pieces from the 17th century, 10 pieces from the 18th century, 27 pieces from the 19th century, and 1 piece from the 20th century, revealing that Joseon-era island travels continued.
Chapter Ⅲ determines which islands our ancestors traveled as found in travel diaries. Islands that were covered twice and more by travel diaries include Namhaedo(13 pieces), Jejudo(1l pieces), Ganghwado(7 pieces), Gukdo(3 pieces), Heuksando(3 pieces), Geumdangdo(2 pieces), and U-ido(2 pieces). Namhaedo and Ganghwado are closer to the land and historic so that they were travelled significantly. Jejudo were visited by people relating to office assignment or exiles, and while in Jejudo, they travelled Mount Halla, etc.
Chapter Ⅳ determines the reason of island travels through travel diaries. Joseon-era island travels are divided into three categories. First, the island trip itself was sought. Second, the traveller himself visited the island due to office assignment or exile, and while staying there, they travelled around the island. Third, while the person was in the island due to office assignment or exile, others visited them there.
