In this study, the effect of the addition of the coupling agent to the impregnating solutions such as polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) solution and the PVA solutions with inorganic additives were evaluated in terms of the applicability of the impregnation solutions and the properties of the impregnated paper. The viscosity of the impregnation solutions was decreased by the addition of the coupling agent, which affected the impregnated weight. The higher addition of the inorganic additives resulted in the higher viscosity and the decrease of the impregnated weight, which could be compensated by the addition of the coupling agent. Impregnated paper by using the PVA solutions with the coupling agent and the inorganic additives showed higher tensile strength and higher endurance strength, indicating that the coupling agents provided the better dispersion of inorganic additives which resulted in the better interfacial coupling of the PVA matrix and inorganic additives. However, the higher interfacial bonding between the PVA matrix and the inorganic additives led to the lower elongation properties. The opacity of the impregnated paper was improved by using the inorganic additives with the coupling agents. Those results showed that the addition of the coupling agents increased the dispersion of the inorganic additives in the PVA matrix and provided the stronger interaction between the PVA matrix and the inorganic additives.
