This study is about the phonetic change of ‘a 啊’, one of the Chinese modal particles. ‘a 啊’ can be pronounced differently, such as [ia], [na], [ua], [ɻa]([ʐa]), [tsa] and [ŋa], according to the coda in the precedent syllable. Some kinds of phonetic changes can be written with different Chinese characters from 啊, such as ya 呀, na 哪, and wa 哇. Previous studies argue a few phonetic changes are mandatory in Chinese phonological system, but some are free variations. However, many different situations can occur in Chinese speakers’ daily conversations. Especially Chinese speakers use [ia](呀) very often. Therefore, real usage of ‘a 啊’ of Chinese speaker is discussed in this paper, with the analyses of Chinese speakers’ corpus and the results of the online survey asking Chinese speakers’ intuition.
Chapter1 is an introduction. In Chapter 2, several influential studies, including books and papers, are presented. Each study has its own perspective on the phonetic change of ‘a 啊’, and thus which points are different and the same between them are discussed. Chapter 3 is the analyses of Chinese speakers’ corpus data, which were collected from BCC Corpus, and the total number of data is 400. Chapter 4 is about the results of the online survey. 203 Chinese speakers participated in the survey, and the total number of questions was 40. Chapter 5 is the summary and conclusion of the study.
According to the results of the study, all the phonetic changes of ‘a 啊’ can be treated as free variations, and especially ya 呀is very commonly used in all the syllable environments. Therefore, ya 呀cannot be ruled out anymore, even in the syllable environments, which were not allowed in previous studies.
