Owing to its rapid and energy-efficient heating capability, ultrasonic vibration energy has been used in various polymer fabrication processes for the purpose of polymer heating and softening. The purpose of this study is to use ultrasonic vibration energy in thermoforming, so called ultrasonic thermoforming, for efficient fabrication of microspeaker diaphragms. The ultrasonic thermoforming process was applied to fabrications of two types of diaphragms, a small microspeaker diaphragm for a mobile phone and a large diaphragm for a TV speaker. For the microspeaker diaphragm fabrication, the effect of the vibration transmission direction was investigated in terms of the forming quality. For the TV speaker diaphragm, infrared heating with additionally used to improve the forming quality of the ultrasonic thermoforming. In both process, effects of forming parameters on the forming quality were investigated. By applying the optimal forming condition, both diaphragms could be successfully fabricated with an excellent forming ratio within 10 seconds cycle time, which was more than 100 seconds in the traditional thermoforming process.
