In Korea, as numbers of new roads have been planed and constructed to meet the demands for infrastructure development, many cut slopes have been constructed in recent decades. Unfortunately, however, many cases of rock slope failure within geologically hazardous rock mass have been occurred during slope excavation works, resulting in increase of construction cost and delayed construction schedule. Considering these issues, this paper aims to introduce a construction case of rock slopes in a national road construction site. Korea. The slopes of the case study arc located in the Ogcheon Supergroup where shows complex geological structures of metasedimentary rocks. The slopes mainly consist of low grade metamorphosed rock(phyllite) and partially consist of cretaceous dyke rock(granite porphyry) intruded into phyllite. In these slopes, well-developed fissility along foliation and weathering were significantly observed. During excavation works, several slopes were collapsed, and it was inferred that low shear strength of discontinuities was occurred due to characteristics of mineral composition and discontinuity in phyllite. Failure modes of the slopes were plane failures along foliation and wedge failures by intersections of joints, etc, and the scales of failure varied from small to large. In this paper, characteristics of rock slopes in phyllite are highlighted in the aspects of geology, geological structure and rock engineering. In addition, the failure modes, geotechnical analysis, causes of failure and reinforcement methods are presented. We hope that this case study would be a useful reference for stability analysis of rock slopes whose site conditions are similar to those of this study site such as geological structures and geotechnical properties.
