In order to investigate the shear behavior of a rupture surface of rock under various thermo-hydro-mechanical (T-H-M) conditions, a series of multistage triaxial tests were conducted on granitic rock specimens under various boundary conditions. Granitic rocks obtained from KURT (KAERI Underground Research Tunnel, a pilot testing facility in real size for high level nuclear waste disposal), were taken as samples. Cylindrical rock specimens were loaded under triaxial compression to induce a rupture surface, Later shear test was carried out on the rupture surface in a triaxial compression chamber to examine the shearing behavior at different boundary conditions. Due to the low permeability of the granitic rock, two water injection holes of 3 - 4 mm in diameter were drilled from the upper and lower surfaces of the specimen to apply water pressure on the rupture surface. For every test stage, the specimen was loaded to its next confining pressure level after it exhibited signs of sliding. Based on Mohr-Coulomb failure criterion, experimental results were analyzed. And the failure strength and peak friction angle of shear surface were investigated as well. The shear behavior was greatly affected by thermal and hydrological conditions and the variations under each condition were investigated quantitatively.
