There has recently been a trend of introducing a reliability approach to the design of the large scale improvement of weak soils due to the uncertainty of the geotechnical parameters in the consolidation. A reliability analysis was not easily adopted by geotechnical engineers due to some difficulties in the theoretical approach; therefore, Duncan (2000) proposed a simplified reliability method for application to geotechnical problems. In this study, the applicability of Duncan`s simplified reliability approach to probabilistic consolidation analysis was evaluated by comparing to the full reliability results, FORM/SORM. The results showed that the simplified reliability method was able to give results approximate to those of the full reliability method, although the simplified reliability method gave a lower calculated probability of failure. In the sensitivity analysis, the horizontal coefficient of consolidation was found to be the most influential factor with respect to consolidation settlement. The simplified reliability method appeared useful in the preliminary design for soil improvement when supplemented with a deterministic method. The full reliability approach is recommended during the detailed design stage and with increasing importance of the soil improvement project.
